Ethnographic Location Public Precision Rounding

Round explicit geographic coordinates to a supplied degree quantum with half ties toward positive infinity; rounding alone does not guarantee location privacy.

Description

Round supplied public-location coordinates to a stated quantum.

Anthropological records preserve reported residence, exchange, use periods, prompt positions and source-qualified terms. Inclusive residence periods count a shared endpoint date, while display-coordinate rounding can still leave a location identifiable. Supplied labels require cultural, historical and consent context.

Round supplied public-location coordinates to a stated quantum.

When to use this tool

Use Ethnographic Location Public Precision Rounding when you already have latitudeDegrees, longitudeDegrees, suppliedQuantumDegrees and need to round supplied public-location coordinates to a stated quantum.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter latitudeDegrees, longitudeDegrees, suppliedQuantumDegrees. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read roundedLatitudeDegrees, roundedLongitudeDegrees. Use the output convention below.

Require input latitude [-90,90], longitude [-180,180] and quantum>0; round each coordinate/quantum with Math.round and multiply back.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
latitudeDegreesLatitude DegreesRequired. Finite number; minimum -90; maximum 90.
longitudeDegreesLongitude DegreesRequired. Finite number; minimum -180; maximum 180.
suppliedQuantumDegreesPositive rounding quantum; proposals outside output latitude/longitude bounds are rejected rather than clamped.Required. Finite number; strictly above 0.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
roundedLatitudeDegreesMath.round(latitude/quantum)*quantum, required to remain in [-90,90] by the output contract.Required. Finite number; minimum -90; maximum 90.
roundedLongitudeDegreesRounded Longitude DegreesRequired. Finite number; minimum -180; maximum 180.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Negative halfway values round toward positive infinity. Coarse quanta can propose out-of-bounds coordinates; the output contract rejects them rather than clamping them. No underlying data removal or privacy guarantee is provided.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Consult original field records and community-provided meanings with the stated research method. Evaluate permissions and protection of underlying records; local balances, locators and masks do not establish cultural interpretation, authority or anonymity.
