Soil Water Retention One Point Normalizer Tool

Calculate soil water retention one point normalizer from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Description

Normalize one supplied soil-water retention point.

Soil measurements distinguish bulk volume, pore volume, water mass, fine earth and excluded rock or sand. Gravimetric water content and volumetric water content have different denominators; accessible-pore shares and bulk-volume shares are not interchangeable. Supplied normalization bounds do not establish a validated retention curve.

Normalize one supplied soil-water retention point.

When to use this tool

Use Soil Water Retention One Point Normalizer when checking the stated soil water, mass, pore or aggregate basis.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter waterContent, residual, saturated. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read effectiveSaturation. Use the output convention below.

Normalize one supplied soil-water retention point. Require saturated > residual and waterContent between them; effectiveSaturation = (water-residual)/(saturated-residual).1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
waterContentWater ContentRequired. Finite number.
residualSigned observed/calculated-minus-reference difference under the operation specified above.Required. Finite number.
saturatedSaturatedRequired. Finite number.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
effectiveSaturation(waterContent-residual)/(saturated-residual); supplied values need ordered bounds but are not individually restricted to [0,1].Required. Finite number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • The three values need compatible water-content bases and are not independently constrained to [0,1] here; no retention curve is fitted.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use verified sampling, density and moisture measurements with the intended complete soil model for field water status, structure or management conclusions.
