Description
Return roughness residuals and RMS against a supplied reference line.
Soil bench and profile terms depend on geometry, reference origins, heat-capacity bases and sign conventions. A pressure, stress or strain is a limited measured/model quantity rather than a complete soil-strength, heat-transport or field-state assessment. Reference lines and physical coefficients are supplied rather than inferred.
Return roughness residuals and RMS against a supplied reference line.
When to use this tool
Use Soil Surface Roughness One Profile Term when checking the stated soil geometry, thermal, mechanical or measurement convention.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter positions, heights, referenceSlope, referenceIntercept. Follow any array-alignment requirements below. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read residuals, rms. Use the output convention below.
Return roughness residuals and RMS against a supplied reference line. Require aligned nonempty arrays; residual = height-referenceIntercept-referenceSlope*position, RMS is scaled sqrt(mean(residual²)).1

| heights | Heights | Required. Array of finite number; maximum items 256. |
| referenceSlope | Caller-supplied reference-line slope; no line is fitted. | Required. Finite number. |
| referenceIntercept | Reference Intercept | Required. Finite number. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| residuals | Residuals | Required. Array of finite number; maximum items 256. |
| rms | Root mean square of supplied-line residuals, without subtracting their sample mean. | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- The line is supplied, not fitted, and no mean subtraction is added; actual surface profile, trend suitability and measurement uncertainty are not verified.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use calibrated measurements and an appropriate complete soil/engineering model for material properties, field behavior or safe practical loading.
