Soil Heat Capacity Basis Factor Tool

Convert compatible supplied specific and bulk-density bases without inferring soil composition.

Description

Convert soil mass-specific to volumetric heat capacity.

Soil bench and profile terms depend on geometry, reference origins, heat-capacity bases and sign conventions. A pressure, stress or strain is a limited measured/model quantity rather than a complete soil-strength, heat-transport or field-state assessment. Reference lines and physical coefficients are supplied rather than inferred.

Convert soil mass-specific to volumetric heat capacity.

When to use this tool

Use Soil Heat Capacity Basis Factor when checking the stated soil geometry, thermal, mechanical or measurement convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter massSpecificCapacity, suppliedBulkDensity. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read volumetricCapacity. Use the output convention below.

Convert soil mass-specific to volumetric heat capacity. Require both properties >= 0; volumetricCapacity = massSpecificCapacity*bulkDensity.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
massSpecificCapacityMass Specific CapacityRequired. Finite number; minimum 0.
suppliedBulkDensitySupplied Bulk DensityRequired. Finite number; minimum 0.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
volumetricCapacityVolumetric CapacityRequired. Finite number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Bulk density must correspond to the heat-capacity mass basis; moisture composition and actual thermal behavior are not inferred.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use calibrated measurements and an appropriate complete soil/engineering model for material properties, field behavior or safe practical loading.
