Soil Air Filled Porosity Moisture Sensitivity Tool

Air-filled pore-fraction sensitivity to one explicit water-content change.

Loading tool…

Description

Return air-filled porosity before and after a water change.

Soil measurements distinguish bulk volume, pore volume, water mass, fine earth and excluded rock or sand. Gravimetric water content and volumetric water content have different denominators; accessible-pore shares and bulk-volume shares are not interchangeable. Supplied normalization bounds do not establish a validated retention curve.

Return air-filled porosity before and after a water change.

When to use this tool

Use Soil Air Filled Porosity Moisture Sensitivity when checking the stated soil water, mass, pore or aggregate basis.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter porosity, initialWater, waterChange. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read initialAir, finalAir, airChange. Use the output convention below.

Return air-filled porosity before and after a water change. Require porosity in [0,1] and both water fractions within [0,porosity]; initialAir = porosity-initialWater, finalAir subtracts waterChange, airChange = -waterChange.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • This assumes fixed total porosity and matching bulk-volume bases; actual gas connectivity, compaction and root/soil conditions are not determined.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use verified sampling, density and moisture measurements with the intended complete soil model for field water status, structure or management conclusions.
