Description
Return unique projection=first+second-overlap and layeredRatio=(first+second)/groundArea.
Agroforestry geometry separates row widths, root-zone intervals, canopy projections and repeated-strip area bases. Optical shade, optical porosity and a clear machinery corridor are different quantities. Ideal dimensions and supplied overlaps can support bookkeeping without establishing light conditions, aerodynamic shelter or safe access.
Return unique projection=first+second-overlap and layeredRatio=(first+second)/groundArea.
When to use this tool
Use Forest Garden Canopy Layer Overlap Term when checking the stated ideal tree-row, shade, buffer or area convention.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter firstArea, secondArea, overlap, groundArea. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read uniqueProjection, layeredRatio. Use the output convention below.
Require positive ground area and nonnegative two layer areas with overlap bounded by each. Return unique projection=first+second-overlap and layeredRatio=(first+second)/groundArea.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| firstArea | First Area | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| secondArea | Second Area | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| overlap | Overlap | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| groundArea | Ground Area | Required. Finite number; strictly above 0. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| uniqueProjection | Unique Projection | Required. Finite number. |
| layeredRatio | Sum of both layer projection areas/ground area, counting their overlap twice. Unit: 1. | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- The layered ratio counts both layers and can exceed one; the unique projection is not required to fit within groundArea.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use measured terrain and canopy geometry, appropriate light/flow models and qualified agricultural/engineering assessment for actual layouts and operations.
