Agriculture Chilling Hours
Integrate actual time inside a caller chilling-temperature band assuming linear sample-to-sample temperature changes; not counting all intervals by a single point or dynamic/Utah chill portions.
Description
Chilling hours measure time inside a chosen temperature band.
Chilling hours measure time inside a chosen temperature band. Linear interpolation between samples counts partial intervals that a point-based tally would miss.1
Integrate actual time inside a caller chilling-temperature band assuming linear sample-to-sample temperature changes; not counting all intervals by a single point or dynamic/Utah chill portions.
When to use Agriculture Chilling Hours
Use this tool to integrate actual time inside a caller chilling-temperature band assuming linear sample-to-sample temperature changes; not counting all intervals by a single point or dynamic/Utah chill portions.
Prepare the field, crop, soil or material measurements for the intended period. Confirm units, dry/wet bases and supplied parameters; keep paired observations aligned.
How to use Agriculture Chilling Hours and understand its results
- Prepare the field, crop, soil or material measurements for the intended period. Confirm units, dry/wet bases and supplied parameters; keep paired observations aligned.
- Enter sampleTimesHours, temperaturesC, callerChillingBandC using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read integratedPiecewiseLinearChillingHours. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| sampleTimesHours | Sample times hours | list of number | Required |
| temperaturesC | Temperatures c | list of number | Required |
| callerChillingBandC | Caller chilling band c | list of number | Required |
Pair at least two strictly increasing times in hours with finite temperatures in °C, and supply two strictly increasing band bounds. For a constant interval, count its full duration if within the inclusive band; otherwise clip crossing fractions to [0,1] and count only the in-band portion. Return integrated hours.
Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths. Each sequence checked for increasing order must contain at least two strictly increasing values.
chillHours = Σ intervalDuration × fraction of linear temperature path within inclusive band Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

} Limitations and assumptions
The band is caller policy and temperature is assumed linear between samples. This is not a Utah or dynamic chill model, and gaps or unresolved short fluctuations are not corrected.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Biologically Effective Degree Days: Evaluate caller explicit BEDD thermal-cap, diurnal-range adjustment and daylight convention, exposing all calibration rather than prescribing a universal viticultural formula or maturity date. For a complementary task, use Poinsettia Short Day Trigger Date: Locate the first caller-defined consecutive uninterrupted-dark run in measured/scheduled poinsettia nights; each date is night start and completion is following morning, not cultivar-specific flowering prediction.
