Tone Prominence Ratio

Calculate a tone-minus-masking-noise prominence ratio and compare it with an explicit caller threshold; a complete ECMA tonal analysis requires band-specific processing.

Description

Tone prominence is a level contrast with a masking-noise basis.

Tone prominence is a level contrast with a masking-noise basis. Full tonal analysis requires frequency-band processing beyond a simple difference.1

Calculate a tone-minus-masking-noise prominence ratio and compare it with an explicit caller threshold; a complete ECMA tonal analysis requires band-specific processing.

When to use Tone Prominence Ratio

Use this tool to calculate a tone-minus-masking-noise prominence ratio and compare it with an explicit caller threshold; a complete ECMA tonal analysis requires band-specific processing.

Choose a supported reference topic, run an input-free reference with an empty object, or prepare the measured values and caller-supplied test records requested. Keep acoustic metrics, frequency, units and test conditions consistent.

How to use Tone Prominence Ratio and understand its results

  1. Choose a supported reference topic, run an input-free reference with an empty object, or prepare the measured values and caller-supplied test records requested. Keep acoustic metrics, frequency, units and test conditions consistent.
  2. Enter maskingNoiseLevelDecibels, thresholdDecibels, toneLevelDecibels using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read prominenceRatioDecibels, prominentByCallerThreshold. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
maskingNoiseLevelDecibelsMasking-noise level (dB)numberRequired
thresholdDecibelsCaller threshold (dB)numberRequired
toneLevelDecibelsTone level (dB)numberRequired

Enter finite signed levels/threshold; return difference and inclusive gate.

prominence=toneLevel−maskingLevel; gate=prominence≥threshold

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

No critical-band integration or complete ECMA tonal analysis is performed.

Numeric inputs, where present, must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Speech SNR Screen: Calculate speech-to-noise level difference and compare it with an explicit caller-supplied minimum. For a complementary task, use Specific Loudness Reference: Return the role of critical-band rate in the Zwicker loudness model.
