How the calculation works
ASCII words are lowercased, groups of a, e, i, o, u, or y are counted, and one group is removed for a trailing e when more than one exists. Each word contributes at least one.
Interpreting the result
Names, abbreviations, loanwords, and spelling exceptions can differ sharply from the heuristic. The output is best used for aggregate estimates, not exact scansion.
Important limitations
- The method is English-oriented and ASCII-only.
- Silent-e and vowel-group exceptions are numerous.
