Total Wind Component Calculator
Combine signed headwind and crosswind components into the total wind magnitude.
Description
Combine perpendicular runway wind components into one wind-speed magnitude.
Total Wind Component Calculator combine perpendicular runway wind components into one wind-speed magnitude.
Use this to reconstruct total wind speed from known headwind/tailwind and crosswind components, including signed components produced by another calculator.
When to use Total Wind Component Calculator
Use this to reconstruct total wind speed from known headwind/tailwind and crosswind components, including signed components produced by another calculator.
How it works
The result is the Euclidean magnitude sqrt(headwind² + crosswind²), so component signs do not affect the total.1
Interpreting the result
Keep the input units, direction conventions, encoding, and ordering rules visible when reusing the result. Preserve the full returned value for downstream calculations and round only for presentation.
Assumptions and limitations
The output loses direction and side information. Keep the original signed components when operational limits distinguish headwind, tailwind, left crosswind, and right crosswind.
