Final Average Salary Calculator

Average the most recent years in a salary history to obtain the final average salary used as an input to defined-benefit pension formulas.

Description

Average the most recent annual salaries in a selected window for use in final-average-pay pension formulas.

Final Average Salary helps you average the most recent annual salaries in a selected window for use in final-average-pay pension formulas.

Use this calculator to derive a final average salary input from an ordered pay history. Defined-benefit plans often combine such an average with credited service and an accrual rate, although the precise averaging definition is plan-specific.

When to use Final Average Salary

Use this calculator to derive a final average salary input from an ordered pay history. Defined-benefit plans often combine such an average with credited service and an accrual rate, although the precise averaging definition is plan-specific.1

How the calculation works

Select the requested number of most recent annual salary observations, add them, and divide by the number selected. The default window is three years and the salary history is interpreted oldest first.

Final average salary = Σ recent salaries / averaging years 1

Inputs and interpretation

Include comparable annual compensation values in chronological order. Decide before calculation whether bonuses, overtime, partial years, caps, and zero-pay periods belong under the governing plan definition.

Assumptions and limitations

This tool calculates only an arithmetic average; it does not calculate benefit accrual, pension liability, high-average compensation, indexed pay, or the highest nonconsecutive years. Using final years can differ materially from a plan that selects highest years.
